fbpx

In one of my previous blog posts I argued that wix, and options like wix, are not good. However, over the last few months I had some experiences with potential customers that have led me to reframe my thoughts on wix.

Wix can be a good option in certain situations… but before I get into that here’s what happened:

Over the last few months I met with a dozen potential web design clients that ended up going with much cheaper web designers (if you can call them that). My quotes were in the $2,500 range and they went with freelance web designers that charged $300-$500.

I’m not upset that I didn’t get the projects. I’m upset with what they got for $300-$500. They got trash websites that will absolutely not benefit their business. Really unpolished, unprofessional websites lacking the very basics of a good website. I’m talking about broken links, broken navigation, poor use of space and colors, no calls to action, mobile unresponsive, just crap.

I thought to myself they could’ve built their own websites on wix and they would’ve been 100x better.

I understand that not everyone can afford to drop a couple grand or more on their website, especially when starting out in business. However, in many cases your website is the face of your company, the first impression, and you don’t want to ruin that with a garbage website.

In those situations where you don’t have the money to spend, you should spend the time to build your own website using Wix, Godaddy Website Builder, or a similar DIY option. They are easy to use and if you look at some professional websites as you’re building your own, you can actually model yours to look half decent. You can get this done in a few hours or a couple of days tops. And if you don’t have the time, nor the money, then what the f%$k are you doing with your time?

Look, the wix website is not gonna be the greatest website ever, or a permanent solution, but it’s going to be good enough. It’s going to be much better than anything that a half-ass wannabe web designer is going to do for $300. And then, when your business is off the ground and you’re seeing steady cash flow you can look into hiring a professional web design company to create a great website and replace your wix website.

When you do so, expect to pay the price for quality if you want quality. Any designer that has a quality portfolio should know their own worth and charge accordingly. Very rarely will you be able to find a good designer that’s cheap.

If you have A LOT of time on your hands and are somewhat tech savvy, I suggest you look at learning WordPress to build your website. Among other benefits, it’s extremely customizable and features plugin that can extend its functionality, but you can collaborate with a professional web designer down the road to help improve your wordpress website (most web designers and companies use wordpress; it’s the most popular platform for a reason).
